August 2014 Show and Tell

Welcome to Show and Tell for August.

Beatrice gets most prolific quilter award for the month.  This is the first one she showed us, a two coloured stunning design - can you imagine the colour possibilities for this?

Here's her next one.  Using up fabric swap squares from a swap she participated in about a decade ago ;-)

Another scrappy quilt.  I like this design too.

Then Beatrice showed us her latest experiments.  She's been trying the chop up your pinwheel craze and it's amazing what you can make from a simple block rearranged.

Can you spot the whoopsie?

Caroline has been using up her bits and pieces and making sweet little snuggle quilts for the bassinets in the local maternity hospital.

I work there, so I know how much they brighten up the rooms.

I'm pretty sure that's Gaylene doing the zombie quilt trick.  She's been making crumb blocks again.

Judy used Kiwiana fabrics in this 3D design.

This is Sue's Liberty quilt.  So many precious pieces of Liberty fabrics.

Darryl had a couple of finished community quilts, this one had an amazing fabric on the back, so I took a picture of that too (it's a bit blurry....or is it just the psychedelic nature of the fabric?!)

I loved this idea of silhouetted cats.  It made a great quilt.

Shirley showed us two pieces made from what she learnt from Juliet Fitness.  The one below with three panels was made in a class with Juliet.

Mathea showed off her Kina quilt.  Hand painted and intensely quilted.

And lastly, Beryl showed us dresses she had been making for children in Africa.  You can read the story about them here.

Pictures of Regional Day and Show and Tell for July

July saw our club holding 'Regional Day'.  This is a day when other clubs within the region are invited to gather as one.  The host club sells tickets, which help pay for hall hire, food and speaker costs.  There are merchants, demonstrations, show and tell, lunch, speakers, raffles and spot prizes.

This first set of photographs is of our speakers.

Val is a local artist.  She works in paint, tapa cloth, weaving and is a very interesting speaker.

Margaret is a long-time quilter who spoke of 'beginnings'.  How she began quilting.  How she then (a few years later) learned that what she was doing was called quilting!  How the Kerikeri club began and how her styles of quilting began.  Very fascinating.

Juliet is a master New York Beauty maker and shared many of her quilts with us.  She also talked extensively about what judges are looking for and then some of the funny, serious and just plain confusing judges comments she had had over the years.

We had a banner challenge and Jane won first place.

Charlotte's banner won second.  Thanks to Ngaire from The Apple Basket for judging.

These are our show and tell quilts.  Edna held up this beauty of a community donation quilt.

Another donation quilt.  All made of polyester fabrics - it will never fade!

We had a community quilts day recently where the club worked collectively on finishing some donation quilts.  So here's another one.

And the last one, a crazy patch quilt.

Beatrice showed off this cute appliqué bunny quilt.

One of our speakers, Jan, showed a set of 12" x 12" journal and challenge quilts that she had been making.  Some of them had very poignant thoughts behind them.

And last note goes to Shirley, who showed cute snap purses that can be made with old metal tape measures.  Crafty!

Didn't get a sticky label? Don't Panic! See below*

Hi everyone

Isn't it wonderful? The registration was posted last week and I hope you had a delightful time, putting your feet up with a cuppa and reading about all the classes we have on offer. The same information is available on our website and the needs list for each class is posted with the class description so you know exactly what you would need for each class you are considering. There is a button that links to a printer friendly PDF version of the needs list as well and in some cases there are extra photos of class samples. Please remember that the photos are a guide to what the class is about and not necessarily exactly what you will be making in class.

*We are sorry for the confusion about the sticky label mentioned in registration booklet. We don't need your number to be on the envelope and we forgot to take this bit out of the instructions. Your envelopes will be opened as they arrive and all you selections will be entered on our computer under your registration number. The computer will then do its thing and sort everything according to your number. Just like magic!

June Show and Tell

Darryl made this cute quilt for her late sister's grandson.

The Kaitaia crew have been making bags from selveges.

Judy is showing off her really cute owl bag.  It lays flat and has a drawstring to pull it into a bag shape.

And Carol, hiding behind a striking graphic table runner.

This is a healing heart quilt made for one of our members who needs an extra bit of love at the moment.

The next three photos are little bits and pieces that Margaret has been using up/clearing out/finishing.

This is Stephanie's block book.  There are pages made of batting inside that can hold blocks-in-progress.

Beatrice makes an interesting block called Princess Mary.  This is a quilt using that block made of multiple fabrics.

And the same block but in only two colours.

And the same Princess Mary block again using three colours.  

This is another of Beatrice's.  Her sewing group had an 'add a round' round robin.  

Ingrid's being doing a lot of foundation piecing lately and this is her own foundation piecing block design.

And last, but not least, Gayleen's quilt, made with two panels and some extra bits and pieces.
