May Show and Tell 2016

Beryl was in a finish it up mode and finished this top from a class with Natalie Murdoch of Wholly Quilts (want to hear an interview with Natalie?  Click here).

We've been learning about making EPP clamshells at club.  Beryl used hers to make this cool little fish bag.

Gayleen made Ingrid this teeny little mallow puff holder!  Ingrid resisted the urge to eat the mallow puff until she showed it off at club!

Ingrid was also in use it up mode.  This quilt has a centre of leftover colour wash blocks.

And another top by Ingrid using up leftover french braids.  Such a classic colour combo.

Ingrid designed this positive and negative Kawakawa leaf block and made two matching placemats.

And a matching table runner.

Jane was using up leftovers too.  The nine patches all have plaids in them.

Sue is visiting Grandchildren very soon.  And the lucky kids are getting a quilt each.  

This one is still in progress, but we won't get to see it finished as she is leaving soon.  Aren't those dinosaurs cool?

Shirley has been her usual creative self and finished off this sample from a class with Petra Pilkington.

Judy found a use for leftover hexagon flowers.  She has stitched two together and made a hot pad out of them.

Gayleen is finishing off this very special healing hearts quilt for a friend who is having a hard time.

Stephanie has turned these blocks from a class at The Country Yard into a gorgeous table runner and coasters.

Decorative Machine Stitch Samplers

My March 2016 show and tell photos were a bit of a flop, but I did manage to capture one photograph that really needs sharing.

The clever quilters from the Kaitaia club brought along their cushions to show us.  Have you ever thought that you really should stitch out every decorative stitch on your machine so you know what it looks like?  Have you ever done it?

Well these ladies have.  And not in a boring way either!  They took folded strips of fabric and stitched long lines of each decorative stitch in different coloured threads.  Then they wove these strips together to form a panel, and then turned the panel into a cushion front.

So now they have a useful sampler of their decorative machine stitches.  I thought this was a totally inspired idea that really should be shared.

You could take this idea and make other useful things  - like a notebook cover, placemats or even a sewing machine cover - then you'd really have your stitch knowledge right in front of you every time you sat at the machine!

Show and Tell October 2015

Welcome to show and tell for the October meeting.  I apologise for the quality of the photographs as I only had my phone.

Judith is holding a panel quilted by Caroline.  This is a donation to the Women's Refuge.

And here's another by Caroline and it's also a donation.

Beatrice has lots of great grand-children to make quilts for.  This applecore quilt is backed in polar fleece for extra snuggliness.  (I made up that word!)

Beatrice is also the selvedge queen.  Here is a new sewing machine cover made with them.

Another by Beatrice.  Her daughter - also a quilter- came and raided her stash, cutting jelly rolls from all her fabrics.  Beatrice used one in the quilt above and three in the quilt below and I believe a couple went home with her daughter.

This is a wedding present.

Ingrid decided to use all her son's shirts for a bright, fun quilt.

The pockets and leftovers went on the back.  Ingrid says she learnt all about why you don't sew cottons and polyesters together....!

Shirley has been experimenting with felt and soldering tools.

Gayleen made this denim quilt as a 'weighted blanket' for a little boy with sensory issues.  It will be layered with a woollen blanket for extra heft and I'm sure she'll get a great workout while quilting it!

Next weekend is Festival of Quilts in Auckland.  Can't wait - see you all there!

August 2015 Show and Tell

Terri had her mixed media wall hanging to show.  This was exhibited at the latest Creative Fibres exhibition and won her a nice prize.

These next few photos are works from Bia, who has been busy.  Bia only hand quilts so these are all wonderfully textured.

Diann made this lovely William Morris wallhanging.

And she is also donating these sweet little quilts to the neonatal unit.

This is our raffle quilt made by members for our January exhibition.  We've just received it back from being professionally quilted by Leonie Wihongi in Whangarei.

Sue started this as a use-it-up recession quilt.  She has a superb sense of colour and has managed to pull them all together wonderfully.

Charlotte did a short explanation and demo on Artist Trading Cards and then everyone had a go at making one.  We plan to trade them at a future club meeting.
