Show and Tell June 2013

Jane, Beryl and Margaret got planning and sewing and put together this quilt top which is destined to be the second prize quilt (and cushion) for our next exhibition raffle.  In real life the green is much more vibrant, but I think my camera was squinting it's eyes against the bright red/green/black combo!

Caroline made another wee quilt for community quilts.  This will be donated to someone in need.  Aren't the dinosaurs in the centres cute?

Beatrice won a jelly roll and whipped up this quilt with it.  The zig-zag is really effective.

Beatrice also made the two quilts above.  They are actually the same block, but different sizes and different layouts.

Joy made placemats using flip and stitch quilt as you go.  They match her sister's china pattern.  The grins are because Jude was trying the hide behind Joy, but Joy was having none of it!

And this is Joy's very first quilt she ever started.  And now, after some unpicking, rearranging and a few sighs, she's finished it.  She used cardboard templates and scissors to cut all those stars!

Mathea has moved up to Kerikeri from the Whangarei area and wow-ed us all with her first show and tell.  She has hand painted the kakapo and background and free-motion stitched all the details.  The lower photo is the back - just as gorgeous as the front.

This was a challenge at Mathea's old guild to use a traditional block.  It's a shame I didn't get a close-up of her amazing embroidery.

This is a very special quilt that Stephanie finished off.  A very dear departed friend of ours started it.

And these lovely hexagons are a life times collection of fabrics from an elderly friend of Steph's.  She had begun cutting hexagons but handed it off to Steph who made it into this sweet wee quilt and gave it back finished.  Quilting is an all over pattern by Ed Reid.

One more from Stephanie.  She agreed to pattern test my bag pattern (it will be available soon) and I think she's done a gorgeous job - love the colours.

Margaret has been making little things.  A cushion with leftovers for community quilts and fridge magnet - how's that for miniature?!

And Daryl was working away busily on the first prize raffle quilt.  She had a group of volunteers help her sew the blocks up and now they are gradually coming together as a quilt top.  Can't wait to see it finished.

May 2013 Show and Tell and some newsletter stuff.

MAY’S SATURDAY STITCH AND CHAT was a great day for our first one.  We had half a dozen regular members, a couple of members who can’t make the Tuesday meetings and some brand newbees.  There was a 11 year girl who left all fired up to start making quilts!  Fantastic to see some beginners getting enthused.  Let’s hope they come back in June.

JUNE SATURDAY STITCH AND CHAT
Saturday 15th of June will see us at Cherry Park House from 11am till 4pm to stitch and chat and hopefully help out some beginner quilters.  Bring your own lunch and $1 to pay for tea and coffee and room hireage.  All skill level's welcome - bring along a friend who's never quilted and lets get them started!

SPRING RETREAT

Spring Retreat will be held at Lonsdale Park, Friday October 4th till Sunday October 6th.  Give your name to Judith or Steph E.

REMINDER!!  July’s meeting is to be held the FIFTH Tuesday of the month.  That will be Tuesday 30th of July.  This is to avoid a conflict with Taupo Symposium.  Hopefully we will have an enthusiastic round up of Symposium by those members who attended.  We will also be having the Community Quilts sewing day.  This is where we work on quilts that are given to the community, so bring your sewing things and lots of enthusiasm and we’ll see how many quilts we can get done.

Call for entries to Living Colour exhibition

Interested in entering a travelling textile art exhibition?

Brenda Gael Smith of http://www.brendagaelsmith.com is curating another exhibition.  She is the curator of the immensely successful Beneath the Southern Sky exhibition that featured at several major quilt shows.  This new exhibition is called Living Colour and I've copied some of the conditions of entry below so you can get an idea of what it's about.  For more information go to http://livingcolourtextiles.com

These Conditions of Entry apply to the Online Entry Form for the Living Colour! travelling textile art exhibition. If you have any queries or concerns, please contact info@livingcolourtextiles.com

General

1. Entry is open to all textile artists. International entries are welcome. Non-Australian artists must provide completed paperwork and payment (if any) to satisfy customs requirements.
2. Entries may be any kind of fibre art but each work must be sturdy enough to travel without special requirements. Works that have significant 3 dimensional features, require special hanging apparatus, or are delicate or require special handling will not be selected.
3. Entries must measure 100x40cm finished (LxW, vertical banner format).  A 1cm variation in any direction is permitted.
4. Entries must include both a hanging sleeve and velcro strips in accordance with the curator’s directions.
5. Entries must be submitted via the Living Colour!  Online Entry Form by no later than 31 January 2014 (NSW, Australia time). No paper entries or disks will be accepted. (See Image Specifications below.)
6. Selected works must be delivered by 28 February 2014 and available to tour for up to 18 months. The curator is not obliged to release or return any work before 1 October 2015.
7. Only one textile work will be selected per entrant, although artists may enter more than one work.
8. The work must be an original design, not a copy of a traditional design or a variation of the work of another artist. All work must be the result of independent effort and must not be the product of an instructional setting in which another artist has provided guidance or assistance.
9. Artwork that differs from the submitted images will not be accepted.
10. Works must not have been previously exhibited. Entrants may share glimpses of the work online but must not publish an image of the entire work until the premier exhibition (currently set for the Australasian Quilt Convention in April 2014).
11. The entrant gives permission for photos of any selected work to be published on the Living Colour! website and used in publicity, reviews or articles.

RED 12 by 12 Challenge

Now is the time to think RED as we prepare for the Taupo Symposium in July 2013. Aotearoa Quilters are holding a RED challenge at Symposium with the idea the quilts are affordable. Take a piece home by a favourite quilter. These are quick and easy to make so encourage everyone to enter!

Think about: fire engines, lust, hearts, red roses, red marks on your school work, Christmas. The ideas are endless.

Only a small 12 by 12 inch square piece.

Conditions of entry

• 12 by 12 inches square
• open to members and non members
• Quilts must have a hanging sleeve at least 6 cm deep and ending 1/2” from either end of quilt.
• The works do not have to be three layers but must be able to be hung from small nails
• entries must be predominantly red
• all quilts entered are accepted i.e.just send your quilt in
• all entries must be for sale and will be on sale for the same price as designated by  Aotearoa Quilters
• entry fee is $10 per quilt for members and $15 per quilt for non- members
• enter as many as you like
• any unsold entries will then go to Hamilton Quilt and Craft Fair for further display and sale opportunities

April Show and Tell

Welcome to April's show and tell for the Kerikeri Patchwork and Quilting Club.

Daryl made this very effective quilt - just the binding left to sew down. 

This was made for Community Quilts and is a true scrap quilt, but the consistent use of lights and darks helps it stay cohesive.  Donella quilted it with big circles and diagonals (click on it for a closer look).

This is a lovely quilt made by Carol d R. from donated fabric from the generous Caroline P.  It was so lovely that it was picked specially to give to Lonsdale Park (the facility where we hold our twice-yearly retreats) to help them raise money as they celebrate 75 years.

The photo above and below show the two sides of a really neat quilt made for a male relative of Judy's.  Denim on one side and flannel on the other.  A true reduce, reuse and recycle quilt.  

The next three quilts below were all made by our very own Shirley (ok, so we share her with Whangarei).  Shirley had a lovely two-page write up on her quilts and her quilting life in the latest edition of New Zealand Quilter.  For that matter, there was also a nice article written about our Club's January exhibition.  So if you haven't seen the articles, head down to your local bookshop and pick up a copy.

The background fabric on the quilt above is discharge dyed, and the leaf fabric was one of those 'can't resist' purchases.

Gaylene showed these cute sets of placemats, tea cosy and coasters made from scraps that no-one knew what to do with.  They'll be for sale at the Kaitaia exhibition (I'll try and find out dates etc).

And here's my little gremlin holding up a kereru wallhanging I'd completed (he didn't stand very still for the photo!)

Saturday Stitch and Chat

Kerikeri Patchwork and Quilting Club are organizing a monthly Saturday Stitch and Chat. 

Are you a quilter but can’t make the club’s Tuesday meetings?  Are you a beginner who needs some help?  Would you like to learn to make quilts but don’t know where to start?  Are you an accomplished patchworker who is willing to share their knowledge?

Come along to Cherry Park House on Landing Road, Kerikeri from 11am till 4pm on Saturday May 18^th to join in.

All welcome: members, non-members, traditionalists, modern patch-workers, hand-quilters, art-quilters, male or female, beginners, dabblers, obsessed….

Bring your own lunch, your project to work on (if you have one) and $1 to help cover room hire and tea and coffee.

February 2012 Meeting - Guest speaker and show and tell

Sylvie Heasman is an artist who paints on fabrics, dyes, makes lovely art quilts and is generally an all-round talented lady!  She came and gave us a very interesting talk about her fabrics, with lots of interesting snippets  - like dyeing in Mexico!  Sylvie and her products can be found at:

We had a busy meeting with our exhibition prizes being given out.  Viewer's choice for a quilt went to Valerie Blight and viewer's choice for a wall hanging went to Beryl Thompson.  First prize in the challenge was Jane Taylor and highly commended went to Ingrid McLennan.

We also had our usual show and tell.  It was a quiet one, which surprised me, but I guess we all spent our Christmas holidays sunning ourselves rather than sewing!

Margaret was busy, however.  Using up bits and bobs.  She made this sweet cot quilt out of a bunch of nine-patches and donated it to community quilts.

She also made these cushions and bags.

And these ones!

We have a new member, Donna, who makes lovely little bags and was able to show us this neat little one.

This bag was made and given to Beatrice by a Japanese friend of hers.  Lovely bits of kimono silks.

Nita found a neat use for old curtain fabric samples.

Darryl's daughter made her this cross stitch called 'The Quilt Shop' and she's had it framed to hang on her wall.

And to top off a great first official meeting of the year, we had a yummy spread for lunch.  See you next month!
