August Show and Tell

This month's show and tell is full of Community Quilts that were finished as a result of July's stitching day.  These are quilts made to be given to people in need, whether it be through community groups or to individuals.

We joked that we should just call it Daryl's show and tell!  Daryl holds all the donated fabrics.  She organises the stitching days, often planning and cutting dozens of quilts before hand.  And of course, she naturally does a lot of stitching on them also.  Gold medal required!

I'm pretty sure that the quilt above is actually for Daryl this time!  She made it from a book called 'Sunday Morning Quilts'.  It's called a confetti quilt, designed to use up all your little scraps - they are all raw edge and quilted directly on.  Daryl only has the binding to finish now.

These are from Carol and are examples of the Princess Mary block.  Beatrice will be demonstrating how to make this block at the next Saturday Stitch and Chat and there will be more details in my next post.  So if you are interested, stay tuned as the workshop is open to both members and public.

One more border and this log cabin top will be finished.  I showed it now as by next month it will be finished and with it's new owner (although I'd quite like to keep it myself!)

This is the centre of another quilt that will be with it's new owner next month.

Next on the meeting's agenda was our Taupo Symposium round up.  Participants talked about and showed examples from the workshops they went to.

Judith (compulsive scrap saver) learned how to use up her itty bits in a class by Chris Kenna.

Aida sewed strips to newspaper in a type of foundation piecing.  I can't remember who tutored this class.

Aida again with her sample from Gloria Loughman's class.  The taro leaf is Aida's own design.

Carol learned lots in this class by a NZ tutor who I forget the name of (I should have written them all down!).

And both Vicki and Carol participated in Susan Carlson's turtle class.

Nita has finished her example from her class - full marks!

July Show and Tell

As I was on Holiday in July, I wasn't able to attend the club meeting.  Luckily Daryl had her camera and some photos were taken.  These following ones show a busy bunch as it was our Community Quilts Day where we all work on quilts to be donated into the community, often to Women's Refuge.

There was also time for some show and tell.  Because I wasn't there I'm guessing who's quilt is who's.  Some people were hiding!  Apologies if I get it wrong.

Diann's quilt.  And if I'm not mistaken, this was a row by row swap that we held a couple of years ago. Diann provided the fabric, we had a theme each month and a different person did each row.  I'm pretty sure that the fifth row down is the one I did.  Looks lovely all together!

I think this is Elaine peeking over the top of her attic window quilt.  Are those cats I see peering from the windows?

Sorry, can't tell who this is, but it's a lovely applique quilt.

Diann again.  I like the enlarged star.

Hmmmm, maybe Sue B?  I think I recognise the gloves! This is a very effective little wallhanging.

Nope, not sure who this is either, but it's nice to see a sampler type quilt.

Beatrice.  I think it's a sewing machine cover, what do you think?

See you again soon for August's photos.  I was there that meeting so I'm pretty sure I know who is who!

Saturday Stitch and Chat

Kerikeri Patchwork and Quilting Club is having another Stitch and Chat Saturday.

This will be held the third Saturday of every month and this month it's Saturday 20th July, at Cherry Park House on Landing Road, Kerikeri.

We'll be there from 11am till 4pm so if you're interested, bring a gold coin to contribute to room hireage and bring your own lunch. Tea and coffee provided.

This is open to anyone who wants to come along - beginners, experienced, or never-done-it-before-how-do-I-get-started?!

Show and Tell June 2013

Jane, Beryl and Margaret got planning and sewing and put together this quilt top which is destined to be the second prize quilt (and cushion) for our next exhibition raffle.  In real life the green is much more vibrant, but I think my camera was squinting it's eyes against the bright red/green/black combo!

Caroline made another wee quilt for community quilts.  This will be donated to someone in need.  Aren't the dinosaurs in the centres cute?

Beatrice won a jelly roll and whipped up this quilt with it.  The zig-zag is really effective.

Beatrice also made the two quilts above.  They are actually the same block, but different sizes and different layouts.

Joy made placemats using flip and stitch quilt as you go.  They match her sister's china pattern.  The grins are because Jude was trying the hide behind Joy, but Joy was having none of it!

And this is Joy's very first quilt she ever started.  And now, after some unpicking, rearranging and a few sighs, she's finished it.  She used cardboard templates and scissors to cut all those stars!

Mathea has moved up to Kerikeri from the Whangarei area and wow-ed us all with her first show and tell.  She has hand painted the kakapo and background and free-motion stitched all the details.  The lower photo is the back - just as gorgeous as the front.

This was a challenge at Mathea's old guild to use a traditional block.  It's a shame I didn't get a close-up of her amazing embroidery.

This is a very special quilt that Stephanie finished off.  A very dear departed friend of ours started it.

And these lovely hexagons are a life times collection of fabrics from an elderly friend of Steph's.  She had begun cutting hexagons but handed it off to Steph who made it into this sweet wee quilt and gave it back finished.  Quilting is an all over pattern by Ed Reid.

One more from Stephanie.  She agreed to pattern test my bag pattern (it will be available soon) and I think she's done a gorgeous job - love the colours.

Margaret has been making little things.  A cushion with leftovers for community quilts and fridge magnet - how's that for miniature?!

And Daryl was working away busily on the first prize raffle quilt.  She had a group of volunteers help her sew the blocks up and now they are gradually coming together as a quilt top.  Can't wait to see it finished.

See you next month!

May 2013 Show and Tell and some newsletter stuff.

MAY’S SATURDAY STITCH AND CHAT was a great day for our first one.  We had half a dozen regular members, a couple of members who can’t make the Tuesday meetings and some brand newbees.  There was a 11 year girl who left all fired up to start making quilts!  Fantastic to see some beginners getting enthused.  Let’s hope they come back in June.

JUNE SATURDAY STITCH AND CHAT
Saturday 15th of June will see us at Cherry Park House from 11am till 4pm to stitch and chat and hopefully help out some beginner quilters.  Bring your own lunch and $1 to pay for tea and coffee and room hireage.  All skill level's welcome - bring along a friend who's never quilted and lets get them started!

SPRING RETREAT
Spring Retreat will be held at Lonsdale Park, Friday October 4th till Sunday October 6th.  Give your name to Judith or Steph E.

REMINDER!!  July’s meeting is to be held the FIFTH Tuesday of the month.  That will be Tuesday 30th of July.  This is to avoid a conflict with Taupo Symposium.  Hopefully we will have an enthusiastic round up of Symposium by those members who attended.  We will also be having the Community Quilts sewing day.  This is where we work on quilts that are given to the community, so bring your sewing things and lots of enthusiasm and we’ll see how many quilts we can get done.

Darryl's quilt made for a challenge.  She's used the Storm at Sea block and all the orange blocks tell a story.

Steph's been making a really big bag to hold all her sewing bits.

Donella's quilt has lots of special bits of embroidery and crochet etc.
Isn't Diane's  I spy quilt fun?!

This is Helen's first quilt, she was asking for help on how to quilt it.

Love these funky aprons of Alison's.

Carol's getting in early for Santa!

Stand still Ingrid!  It has a penguin in the centre for her St John juniors.  A penguin is their emblem.
See you next month!
